Up in the frozen wastes you are guaranteed snow, snow and more snow. But the bad news is there are few mountains of any note except perhaps Hemsterdal in Norway and Åre in Sweden. Elsewhere there are limited amounts of skiing and most resorts could be skied out in a day. Add to that hugely high prices (nine euros for a beer), which is why the Alpine resorts are full of Scandinavians skiing there rather than at home.

  • Zermatt

Zermatt is arguably the world's most scenically beautiful winter resort thanks to the aweinspiring views of the mighty Matterhorn, which towers above the old village.
