Sunshine Village

Sunshine is the resort of the atmospheric cowboy town of Banff and just a 20 minute drive away sand has everything from the easiest slopes to the vertiginous descents.

Sunshine Village is 20 minutes from Banff, then the same again in a gondola up a narrow valley (which is a nice end of the day run down).

The main mountain covers all the bases, from good beginners area to big, above-treeline cruising to the double black hell of Delirium Dive – you need an avalanche transceiver to even open the electronic gate, then must hike up before dropping into a super steep bowl.

Recover with a drink at the Sunshine Inn, the on-mountain hotel or at the lively Trapper’s Bar at the top of the gondola, from where lifts fan out, or you can drop down into the forested runs below. But that’s not the end of it.

There’s a gnarly second mountain, Goat’s Eye, where black runs are the easiest, and there are a welter of off-piste gullies and ridges. Lots of fun for everyone, although in recent years Goat’s Eye mountain has made this a Mecca for experts.
