Lake Louise drowns in snow

Canada’s leading ski area Lake Louise is being deluged with back-to-back snowstorms and is the first in Canada to open – with mountain crews working round the clock to get pistes ready for skiers and riders.

Lake Louise director Dan Markham told us – “It is unbelievable. With over a half a metre of snow in the last 24 hrs and almost two metres already this season, Louise is breaking early-season records wide open. In the best of mid-winter conditions ever, skiers and snowboarders are out there enjoying face shots of fresh powder with no bottom in sight.

“This unprecedented snowfall has forced us to open front-mountain lifts today and the back-mountain Ptarmigan and Larch chairs tomorrow, with rumours Paradise will open this weekend.

“That will have all lifts open by the 3rd weekend of November. Unbelievable. Add in Sunny Kid #2 in the Learning area and Temple Lodge on the back side and you have the best conditions in the country.”
Dan adds: “There’s hardly any snow in Calgary, but don’t be fooled, it’s mid-winter here in Louise and I really urge skiers to come now – but watch the roads – its gets rather white as you approach the resorts.”

Lake Louise has won the World Snow Awards as Canada’s best ski area for two years in a row – from the awards body in Kitzbühel, Austria. It has been described by the Good Ski Guide’s AZ directory as a real European-style mountain with runs for every kind of skier – and Canada’s best mountain scenery.
