Saalbach Hinterglemm Leogang Fieberbrunn

Ski Circus now in full swing

As Good Ski Guide forecast last season, Austria’s monster new ski circuit is up and running with opening of the gondola link  and piste that connects the resort of Fieberbrunn in the Tirol to the Saalbach Ski Circus over the mountains in Salzburg region, giving a massive 270km of pistes, mainly with snow canons.

The new circuit has a tongue-twisting name of Ski Circus Circus  Saalbach Hinterglemm Leogang Fieberbrunn –  and boasts 100km more runs than the SkiWelt area in the Tirol. And now there is talk that the new super circuit will grow again in future to join with the neighbouring Zell am See-Kaprun 140km circuit – making it Europe’s third-biggest region after France’s Trois Vallees and the Portes du Soleil.

The new Saalbach link is by a 10-seat gondola from the valley station at Reckmoos South in Fieberbrunn up to the mountain station Reiterkogel at 1819m above Hinterglemm. The creation of the new 3.5km long ‘Vierstadlalm’ red piste transports skiers and boarders from the top of Reiterkogel.

Tirol Tourism Director Josef Margreiter told GSG “Ah! yes. We Austrians are becoming more competitive on ski mileage than the French would wish – and we have the best quality too,” including a long, tough black right into the entre.
All of the ski villages are picture-postcard pretty, boasting typical Austrian chalet architecture, with Saalbach being the largest and liveliest –and runs right back to the village and your hotel if you are lucky.
Neighbouring Hinterglemm is perfect for blue-run skiers as they can do the entire valley circuit on long easy runs.
Over the mountain is Leogang, favoured by better skiers because it is north-facing and keeps the snow in good shape longer. And a couple of excellent long black runs to the valley – and to those of you staying at the famous Krallerhof Hotel – an easy piste right back to the doorstep.
Fieberbrunn is in the Tirol region and accesses the Ski Circus by gondola and red piste. It is similar in look and style, and perhaps a tad cheaper than its new neighbours. But well worth the effort to ski down for a look and perhaps a lunch.
