Romantic ski getaways

GSG tells you the best places for a ski love-in.

Good Ski Guide has polled readers asking for a wish-list of features they want - and among the top requests was for a list of the best hotels and chalets ideal for a romantic holiday, break, honeymoon, or just a place where couples can be together.

This followed our delightful first edition visit to a brilliant hideaway on the ski slopes of the famous Ski Circus in Austria’s biggest ski region.  So big in fact that you can easily hide away in many of the luxurious chalets or lodges dotted all over the slopes. The lovely Forsthofalm eco hotel and spa in Leogang, on North facing slopes which hold the snows late season, and is linked to the other three resorts in the 270km  Saalbach Hinterglemm Leogang Fieberbrunn circuit.

First thing we noticed was lots of happy couples and a distinct absence of children and a really friendly welcoming atmosphere, and it got better..

  • Everything was built round natural and recyclable materials, very little metal, with no nails or hinges – everything was wooden and the place 3 even  smelled of pine.
  • Food and drink was organic and free of additives and tasted amazing and clearly free of the junk that manufacturers seem to dose everything for longer life. The natural honey and home-made bread and jams were sensational.
  • Even the spa was a masterpiece – swim pool water a warm 32c, and at the bottom of the slopes so you could relax after a sauna and watch skiers trudging home – or even better - take a dip in the  rooftop SPAronama for wide-reaching mountain views.
  • Best of all for me was Forsthofalm’s relaxed and intimate atmosphere with happy couples strolling hand-in-hand and loving every minute of their romantic getaway, which costs only £120 a night half-board.

Ooo-la, la breaks in the French Alps

British ski operator Ski Beat put forward two ideally-priced  “love” chalets.. in the midst of France’s famous Three Valleys ski area, choice of Prince William, Kate and Pippa Middleton, Leonardo di Caprio and the Beckhams. Chalet Beriozka is a romantic retreat set amongst the trees in La Tania, between Meribel and Courchevel, where you snuggle up on the secluded balcony and watch the snow fall, the sun rise or set with views of some of the massive 625kms of groomed pistes.

A week’s stay during the remainder of this season costs from £659pp, with fully catered accommodation at the Chalet Beriozka, daily cooked breakfast, tasty home made cakes with afternoon tea, 3 course evening meals, return Gatwick and Manchester flights, transfers, and friendly chalet staff to prepare and cook, book a couples massage, order in-room champagne, or advise the best place to propose. www.skibeat.co.uk, 01273 855100

La  Plagne turns up the heat

Share a hot chocolate on the terrace, bubble away together in the chalet’s hot tub, or get steamy in the outdoor sauna at Chalet Alisier in the heart of Plagne 1800, with easy links to the 425kms of ski pistes. Ski Beat staff will organise romantic treats, from champagne to celebratory cakes, and are on hand to organise massages, advise on candle-lit restaurants or the most romantic spots for a snowy walk, or to ski away from the masses.

They also prepare daily cooked breakfast, home-baked cakes with afternoon tea and three course evening meals with wine and a week’s skiing, all from £599pp, for return Gatwick or Manchester flights, transfers and a 7 night fully catered stay at the chalet.
